I was in manufacturing for 20-odd years, doing a lot of export for the automotive industry. I also worked as a general manager at a mushroom farm for three years then went back into manufacturing for a year. But I really wanted to work for myself and this has been the greatest advantage of being a franchisee. As a franchisee, I have plenty of flexibility and the support of the Auto Masters group has been key to achieving this. If you’re buying an Auto Masters as an investment, you can rely on the managers and technicians to have strong knowledge in cars. I think it’s a great business. If you follow the system it can be very rewarding; it doesn’t have to be too complicated. Looking after my staff as well as we can will ensure they’ll do as good a job as they can for us. I don’t have to spend all my time in the stores, which gives me time to spend with family.

I didn’t know anything about cars – I didn’t even know what an air filter was. My friend said ‘you’re the best type of person to run these shops because you can explain to people who also don’t know what an air filter is on a car’ The next morning I drafted an email to Nigel, the owner, and we had an interview the next week. It was totally different going from working with robots and in the construction industry to something like Auto Masters. The lifestyle that has come from it feels like a dream and it really has changed my life. Every day is different, and every day has its own rewarding challenges, I really enjoy the freedom it has given me. I don’t have to be in the stores 9 to 5 for them to run really well. Auto Masters gave me the training to get me into this position. Basically, if you stick to their formula you’ll be on a winner. It’s such a great network. When we get together for conferences the amount I learn off the other owners is great. The regular meetings and catchups between franchisees and the Auto Masters management team has proved to be a great learning experience to bounce ideas off of each other and constantly learn.

I looked at a few franchises before I met with Auto Masters owner Nigel Warr. I felt Auto Masters had a great structure and guidance. I would have probably done my own business on the cheap, with no goal and cheap equipment. Also, my wife was a lot happier to go with Auto Masters because of the security of the business.
